With Winter fast approaching you’re probably beginning to think about how you’ll handle your workouts in the cold weather. You probably don’t want to go outside in the cold to exercise, so why not try a few indoor exercises? There are plenty of great workouts you can do from the comfort of your own home, and a lot of them require little to no equipment. Here are a few great indoor exercises to try this winter.

HIIT

A high-intensity interval training program is ideal for people who want to make the most of their workouts in a shorter amount of time. During a HIIT session, you go fast and hard for a few minutes, then take a break. For instance, you might spend 60 seconds doing lunges before taking a short 30-second break and jumping back in with another 60 seconds of squats. You can find plenty of easy-to-follow HIIT workouts on the Internet, or just do some of the basics like squats, pushups, and jumping jacks.

Yoga

Yoga might seem intimidating, but there are plenty of ways to get into it regardless of your own skill and health needs. If you’re a beginner, try looking up some yoga workouts on the internet. Once you’ve gotten the hang of some of the poses, you might even be able to create your own custom yoga routine. All you really need to do yoga is a yoga mat, and if you don’t have one your carpet will often be enough.

Walking Up and Down The Stairs

One of the easiest indoor workouts for most people is walking up and down the stairs. Walking up and down the stairs can be a great form of cardio. If you’re looking for something a bit more challenging, try a step aerobic exercise. This type of exercise will test your ability to step up and down from the landing, alternating between doing so on one side and the other. You can also implement this into a HIIT workout by switching between the steps and other exercises.

Barre

One of the most fun and challenging types of exercise is the barre, which is a type of exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscles and improving one’s cardiovascular endurance. It’s commonly assumed that you need equipment for this but in reality, you can use stuff around your house. If you feel comfortable with your balance, you won’t need any equipment at all. If you don’t, try a chair or a countertop. Some barre workouts call for hand weights, but those can be easily substituted by canned goods you likely have laying around the kitchen.

Planks

A plank is a great exercise for strengthening the core and upper body. It can be performed with a variety of movements depending on your goals and strength. If you’re new to this exercise, try starting with your knees bent on the floor as opposed to having straight legs. Some people find it easier to do this by bending at the elbows instead of withstanding a plank with both hands on the floor.
